yep, I accomplished those 7 'landmark' visits within my first 7 years, but I didn't know about the freshwater conch thing until later. the people who made up all that stuff should have made it a little more challenging by adding a weekend visit to fort jefferson. sitting through a hurricane could be another.. but I digress..

as much as hemingway and the hemingway house gets promoted you'd think that a visit to the hemingway house would be on that list. that's one place I haven't been to visit. i'd really only go to see those cats, but I have a hemingway cats calendar which saves me a trip (and some money; it's not cheap to visit that place). if I make it to the end of this month I will have been here exactly 30 years.  |

I'm sure that some of the kitties that you care for are in the Hemingway Cat Family - distantly related, perhaps, but related nonetheless. Key West isn't that large of an island, cats get around, and they've had a long time to intermingle.

We always stay in Marathon and go into Key West for at least one day. I have seen all those places, thanks to a family that insists on "checking off lists" when we travel.   I guess we qualify for the 7 landmarks, but we need to go back down there a couple more times for 7 trips.  In my opinion, paying respects to Fred the Tree should be a required part of the 7 Mile bridge trip.  Last time there we trekked the old 7 mile bridge to Pigeon Key. That was fun. Found out Arnold offered to buy it while down there filming True Lies.  Quote:

I did that on my first visit in '93. fun then, but I wouldn't do it now (because of my back). Quote:

I went to Key West for a few days in 2013 - it was wonderful. I visited the Hemingway house and saw the cats there. For coin enthusiasts there's also a Wheat cent set into the cement by the swimming pool. The story goes that Hemingway returned from a trip to find hs wife had had the pool constructed during his absence. When he discovered the cost, he is said to have shouted "You've taken nearly all my money, so you may as well have my very last cent!" and he flung it into the drying cement by the pool. |

I located it once, but cannot remember where it is in there. Quote:
