As a new collector, I'm learning about the MANY books & website that identify varieties. I would appreciate opinions on which are the most appropriate sources to rely on for identifying value (premium) vs. varieties of little of no premium. I realize collectors with interest in various variety "niches" may be willing to pay a premium for coins that are not of interest to most collectors.
Some of the variety "sources" I've learned about: - Cherry Picker's - Wexler's Die Varieties - Brian's Variety Coins - Cuds-On-Coins - Variety Vista - Variety's and Errors

I use Wexlers Die Varieties, cherry pickers guides, and Variety Vista. If your looking for minor varieties, Wexler's Website and Variety Vista is where to go. If your looking for major varieties, Cherry Pickers Guide is best. IMO it all depends on what kind of collector you are. Each different source provides different things to look for. As for prices, Wexlers site lists some prices on certain coins, but I highly reccomend the Cherrypicker guides for updated and current prices on nicer varieties. A couple other things I like about the Cherrypicker guide's prices is that the prices for the coin your looking at are raw, ungraded, and they are almost all listed in PCGS....I think. All in all, It comes down to what your looking for. Hope this helps! Happy hunting! (Also check out Copper Coins) http://www.coppercoins.com/advsearch.php-CH27

The values on VarietyVista are, as noted by the site's author, just rough numbers and should only be considered placeholders for values and not taken as actual values. Coppercoins, however, does give an estimated value for all the varieties and while fairly subjective will give a better look at which ones are worth higher premiums. Of course, just searching ebay for something like " Lincoln Cent RPM" and then clicking on "sold" and "highest price first" will show you what's really selling for higher dollars.

Curious if anyone uses the Greysheet or Greensheet? Do they include variety and error coins in there listings? Thanks, Doug.

Never have. I know what it is though. Seems like coin buyers and sellers at coin shows use it a lot for current pricing. But that is more for just normal coin prices. I don't know if they have varieties listed in them? But they would have to have a lot more pages if it did.
