I recently bid in MANY on-line auctions. Didn't read the fine print in one of them. Won a Canadian coin for $1.15 ( - a beater common date 5 cent silver Victoria). When I went to pay, the shipping fee was $38! This could be mailed to me uninsured with one stamp.

Anyway I contacted the seller and the folks running the main website. Told them I would pay for the coin and they could keep it and not charge me for the shipping. So far no good news, although the main auction web site seems to be in agreement with me.

I know I should have read the fine print for each auction, but everything else I bid on from this website had reasonable shipping fees. I just messed up but not reading everything for this one lot.

I've seen this on ebay a few times. Seemingly a decent deal for an item until you look at the shipping price of $50. Best I can say is good luck getting it resolved and lesson learned.

I used to buy coins from an online dealer ,one or two coins at a time . He always charged me $5 for shipping but just put the coin(s) in a plain envelope with one $0.50 stamp on it . After awhile I got disgusted and stopped buying from him .

Report seller for excessive shipping, as they are not allowed to charge more than the actual shipping cost + a fair and reasonable handling fee.

If seller does not work with you, just don't pay for the item and you should not receive a NPB "strike" as long as ebay resolved the case in your favor.

$38 definitely seems excessive.

Does it matter? If he paid and then returned it he would still have to eat the $38 shipping on a $1.61 cent coin. Better to just pay for the coin and tell him to keep it like the OP suggested. Or are you suggesting when it arrives he should file a SNAD claim just to get out of the shipping?

I would simply humble myself, and explain that I didn't notice the high shipping cost, and could I please cancel the purchase.

Sometimes that works, at least on ebay, where buyers usually get their way with no ill effects.

I've been in that place too but not on ebay. I paid $15 for some coins and the shipping was $12 additional. I guess they thought my original bid wasn't high enough.

I always check the cost of shipping before buying or bidding.

It was NOT ebay where it is easy to see shipping charges. The auction site I used does not post the shipping right below the item when you open a search. You have to open the item and then surf around. But even then, you don't always find a fixed price. This particular auction did note a $38 shipping fee, but I just missed it.

The auction site did offer to refund $13 of my $38 but I am hoping the seller takes me up on my offer that he refund all postage and keep the coin that I have already paid for.

Sorry to hear this however, it is becoming a widely used scam everywhere. So many mail order place say free shipping, then tack on a high handling fee, guarantee delivery fees, etc. Free shipping? If you get any of those catalogs check out the order form before you even start looking at the merchandise. Same with coins. First read anything they say about shipping, insurances, etc. Add those prices on to whatever your buying.
