Hi,

My first post to the forum. I have a Coronet Head large cent that looks like it may have been struck with the reverse on both sides. Looking for any information including rarity and worth.

Welcome to the forum. I see something, I think, but I will defer to the experts.

One reverse is correct - the other is backwards looking like a vise job.
If by chance a coin was stuck in the die and was actually what caused the mirror image strike then that's gonna be a great error, BUT............

So if it is a vise job would that mean the coin thickness would be different than a normal Coronet?

shouldn't be as you are pressing one minted coin against another already minted coin - just transfering the details except it shows up backwards (obviously).

Thanks for the knowledge. Is there a way to confirm either possibility?

I would like to see better image if possible, a little more in focus. I think this one MAY have possibilities. The surfaces appear rough, possibly from being buried, but I think this may have a chance at being a full brockage. One other thing. Is it coin orientation or medal orientation?

Here are better pictures. Orientation is medallic.

On your first set of pictures the backwards side details look incuse but on your new pictures it looks like the details are raised.
Can you let us know which is correct?

This is not in my area of expertise, but from what I can observe, I am leaning towards a full brockage coin.
If it was a vise job, there would be some trace of the Obverse showing in the fields. By looking at the second
photo, I see none showing.

I think it is a full brockage. I see no trace of an obverse, both sides are from the same variety, one side raised and one side incuse, alignment looks right and the images are medallic in orientation. Everything fits. Too bad it has been buried at some point corroding the surfaces.

to the CCF! Cool first post here, WalkingJim!

IMHO, Conder's correct, as usual. These early brockages are quite rare, but naturally, the serious environmental damage much diminishes its value.

If this was mine, I'd have it authenticated as a brockage (preferably by SEGS or NGC) but NOT graded (this, to lessen fees). Just my take ....

Thanks to all for your input & knowledge, definitely learned something. ExoGuy, that's good advice regarding grading, thanks.
