I found this 1906 P Indian Head cent CRH and while I know its not a modern coin it was found hunting modern cents. The reverse looks like it might have been struck with a pitted rusted die. Cool cent to find CRH, still doesn't look too bad being 113 years old.

The bottom looks like it was Struck Through Grease with some grit in it. If it were rusty the whole coin would be pitted with incuse marks.(Rust would be raised on a die, incuse on a coin)

If iron oxide formation (rust) is present on the die, I'd think it might leave an impression on the coin. If a rusted die was cleaned meaning the symptom was removed might leave the die pitted and show raised on the coin. Thanks, Doug.

I believe you're right Doug. I have a 1920 cent that was struck with what errorref.com calls a "Rusty" die.

But if they had rust on the die and they polished the die to remove it, the fields would look normal, but the deeper devices would still have incuse marks on the tops of the devices on coins.
