I found this 1972 D LMC with what appears to be a pretty massive clash on the reverse. It also has a little die chip on the bottom of the left side of the memorial. The clash looks like it might have affected the mouth area of the bust on the obverse. Also, even though the pics didn't pic it up it almost looks like the area on the obverse on top of the clash on the reverse looks like part of the reverse design shows through. Thoughts please.

Could be, but I'm not seeing a ton of identifiable clashing from your pics. I'm sure that you've seen the digital overlays which help to figure out which parts of the design form the clash. For example, what part of the obv design lines up with the 10th and 11th bays on the Lincoln Memorial?

Spence, that is what is puzzling me, there is nothing on the obverse that could have caused this. Pretty stumped

The reverse definitely shows signs of being polished down. You can tell on the 10th and 11th bay.

Maybe there was an issue with feeder finger die scrapes? Isolated polishing may be caused what we are seeing.

Or other die scrapes:

Feeder finger die scrapes usually occur in the other direction.

Over polishing makes absolutely perfect sense.
