Good morning! I'm new and have no knowledge of coins. My grandfather who died in the 70's was a collector and I have some of his coins. I found this Mercury dime but can't make out the date. It looks blurred and looking through a jewelers loupe it looks like there's lines going through the full date. Nothing else around the date looks damaged. I'm old and have cataracts and a cheap camera (sorry). Could this be some sort of error?

@yoshie51, first welcome to CCF. Second, it is possible that there was some grease in the die that partly obscured the date as this coin was being struck. More likely is that this area was damaged after it left the mint, but both reasons are possible. From your current picture it is too hard to tell which it was.

Any chance of getting a new picture of the front that is closer to being in focus?

Thanks so much for getting back to me so soon! I tried taking another picture using my phone and tried cropping the date portion but I couldn't get it to work (like I said I'm old). See if this is any better. The date part is really hard to read let alone take a close picture.

Hey, old does not mean you can't do it! I'm old too.

To me, it clearly looks like quite a while ago, some bored individual decided one day for whatever reason to scratch the date off a dime.

I agree--this looks like purposeful damage. At least this dime is still worth melt.

Thanks for all your help! I've got a mess of old coins I may need advice on in the future. I have to assume since my grandfather was a collector he sold most of the ones that had value. Thanks again!
