I have pulled some hammered coins out of my cull pile and had a go at IDing them. New area to me, but I found quite an interesting selection.

1. Alfonso VIII of Toledo.
HNFVs REX , around circle containing head of Alfonso left
+ TOLLETH, around circle containing a cross with stars in the first and third quarter

2. Sigismund of Hungary,1387-1437 AD
Crown
Patriarchal Cross
Holy roman emperor from 1433 until his death.

3. William I of Sicily, 1154- 1166 AD
REX W,
MP / OY, Virgin with child.

A nice selection of medieval coins. I have added several lately and it is a very interesting area in which to collect.

England used hammered silver, but not hammered bronze.
For this reason, and their lower survival rate, they always attract my interest.

Cool coins! I never seem to get medieval coins anywhere near as nice as those, and when I do they're usually very expensive...

Incidentally, is the Sicilian coin scyphate, or is that just a trick of the lighting?

It is scyphate, but I'm not sure it is meant to be. It also has arabic lettering, but I haven't been able to find a translation.

I should acquire some English hammered coinage, but it is too expensive for me. Besides, that is history that is close at hand anyway, as opposed to the history of Roman Britain, which was wiped away by the turmoil of the dark ages.

The Sicilian Follaro was supposed to be scyphate. Sicily was very much a border state and as such it was a melting pot of different cultures with a significant Arabic population. It was normal for the coins to have Arabic and Latin on them. the Arabic gives the mint and date of striking ( in words not numerals) from MEC vol 14

@ben, the attribution on the Follaro is Biaggi #1226.
