The dies for these nickels are noted for often developing cracks and chips. It is difficult to find
Shield nickels that don't have die breaks, or die chips:-)
Also to point out something that coppercoins mentions now and then. With todays eyes we might want to call these errors. At the time the coin was minted, they used dies until they literally broke apart.
Die cracks , chips and even some
Cuds were a normal part of the process back then. Die hard (Hey, that's a good one:-) sheild nickel fans use these cracks and chips as die markers but they seldom consider them errors.
