Hello. I just picked up two 16D Mercury dimes... I am going in AG3 for both, although one I have labled as better is obviously, better IMO.

Better Grade... or atleast in person this one seems better:

72.22 KB

And the one that appears to be a little lower grade:

82.03 KB

Rest in Peace

Wow! What a couple of "vererans" you have there! I think you have nailed the grades on both. According to Ruddy's photo grade, to make a G-4 the rim wear can only "touch" the tops of the letters. In AG-3, the rim is worn to the mid-point of the obverse lettering, both of yours appear that way. The reverse "rules" are about the same, with flat wear to the mid-point of the letters and mint mark as well. Based on the relative rarity of these coins, these are really neat! Congratulations! Mike P.S, I agree there is slightly more detail on the first example, i.e.,the mint-mark and head detail.

I also agree that the first coin is slightly better than the second, but both fall into the AG3 category. For what it's worth, these two coins in AG3 look nicer than a lot of G4's that I've seen.
