Hello all! I am going through several hundred 1982 LMC's trying to sort them out from copper and zinc. I am running in to a wide range of weights. 3.00-3.09 3.10-3.16 I am assuming anthing in 3.0 and up are copper 2.40-2.99 Anything below 3.0 is zinc. Please let me know if I am correct on my assumption! Thanks, S/F

If you are getting weights in these ranges you might want to change batteries. The 2.99 in closer to copper weight than zinc. The correct weights should be 3.1 for copper and 2.5 for zinc.

A worn or slightly deficient to begin with bronze example might well dip below 3 grams, but a Zincoln isn't going to gain weight to get anywhere near that number.

Thank for the info, all thses penny are in a high AU to MS state. None of the them are worn down to the point where it would cause weight variants. I have a new gram scale and will try new batteries to rule out anything. If neded I can take a photo of them.
Thanks, S/F

Copper should weigh between 2.98 grams and 3.24 grams (3.11 +/- .13 grams) Zinc should weigh between 2.4 and 2.6 grams (2.5 +/-.1 grams)

All four mints struck zinc cents for circulation in 1982. The ones struck in San Francisco and West Point did not have mintmarks and can't be told from the Philadelphia coins.

Regarding the bronze 82's, how can you tell other than the below 3.00 grams.

Could someone clarify what coins made in 82 were made from. I read Zinc, Copper and Bronze.

The cents in 1982 first started out being made for an alloy of 95% copper and 5% zinc. Technically this is brass, but you will often hear them referred to and being copper or bronze. (In earlier years, 09 - 42 and 46 - 1962, they were made of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc. That alloy is a bronze alloy. From 1963 to 1982 tin was removed making them brass, but so many people were used to thinking of the cent as bronze that they continued to call it that.)
Later in 1982 the composition changed to pure copper plated onto a pure zinc core. (They had problems with the plating having many bubbles forming under it due to poor bonding so in 1983 a trace amount of copper was added to the core to improve the plating adhesion.)
So thechnically you have brass, and copper plated zinc cents in 1982. But they are commonly just referred to as "copper", and "zinc".
