Hello community! I have several 1982, 1982 D small date and large date Lincoln Memorial Cents that weigh 3.08 grams. From what I read the weight matches up howevr I am skeptical that these are of the bronze planchets. Is there a specific look to them as well? Took a group pic of some to save loading time.

Thnaks

Those are 1982''s not 1992's. The 1982 large date both minted in philly and Denver they used both copper and zinc planchets. So a 1982 P&D large date in copper is extremely common. It's the 1982 D small date that you want to find in copper.

By color alone for me is a no, as it can be deceptive. Seems copper plate tones like copper. Overall appearance can be a tell. Copper-plated zinc cent in the early years had some issues, but not always. The feel in hand is another indicator, but actual weight makes the final call. Thanks, Doug.

I've never seen or heard of a zinc cent weighing more than 2.7g.

Would it be safe to say the weight being 3.08 grams would mean it's a bronze?

Yes, that would be bronze. I believe 3.11 grams is the standard. Not every coin is perfectly weighted, hence a specific Weight Tolerance is allowed.

The copper cents can weigh anywhere from 2.98 to 3.24 grams
copper plated zinc will weigh from 2.4 to 2.6 grams.

There is no overlap in the weight ranges which is why weight is a good way to tell them apart.
