1977 quarter with an unusual edge or rim. Almost looks like it's seperating. Any idea what this is and what causes it? Is it a mint error?

It looks like rim finning. No premium for this.

Actually it is flattened rim finning. A tilted die allowed metal to flow around the die and collar making the edge raised. But after the coin was was counted, wrapped and circulated, the fin flattened.

With the rim original, it would have had a premium. But probably 1% make it out undamaged.
