Hi there fellow banknote collectors. I have heard on the grapevine that PCGS currency and PCGS gold shield grading services are going to merge as one. Also that all future notes will be housed in the PCGS gold shield holder. Would this be true?.

Secure shield is a tier on the coin grading business. The coin grading and the currency grading are two separate divisions and I believe they keep them separate for a reason. But I could see them adding a "Secure Shield" tier to the currency grading business but it wouldn't be a merging with the coin grading business.

I think the OP is talking about PCGS Gold Shield currency grading and not the gold shield service for coins. It is a bit confusing that PCGS uses the same gold shield labels for the two different services.

My understanding is that PCGS started this service after they licensed the PCGS name to PCGS Currency in order to begin grading currency themselves.

PCGS-Gold-Shield---PCGS-Currency.

The licensing agreement that K3b, Inc had with Collectors Universe to use the PCGS name expired on 30 Jan 2019 and was not renewed. So, PCGS Currency won't be merging with PCGS Gold Shield currency grading, but maybe Collectors Universe will combine it with something new

Note, PCGScurrency.com website is no longer operative. Just as well, I always used PMG.

It might in a way. I would be shocked if they don't start the paper money grading again sometime this year. They seem to want to bring it back in house which makes sense and by doing so may decide to use the Gold Shield name for it since that's what they use internationally
