I posted what my goals were for 2019 in an earlier thread and 1 of those goals was to purchase my first Seated Liberty dollar. While looking around ebay I came across this one....

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1870-Seate...AOSwVCpcRiO9

I was hoping to get some opinions on the coin, the price and any other thoughts on the coin. I will admit that since I don't own one, I really don't know much about the SLD's Thanks.

It's OK. Nothing special about the coin or the price.

I like it. Anyone want to chime on if the cleaning is acceptable. I see lines going in one direction on both sides. If it's a past acceptable cleaning then I like it.

I'd say it's a nice coin at a decent price.

Never occurred to me it might be cleaned. I did think that the coin has a good strike, especially the reverse. According to my RedBook the mintage is 415,000.

I see lines going down slightly to the right on the front and the back....but I'm no expert on cleanings. It was more of a question. So, if someone with expertise says it's not ...go buy it then if you like it....I kind of like it....Better buy it fast. LOL

I'm not an expert either. I'm just wondering, could we see clearing and PCGS not see it?

The coin appears to have had an old cleaning that is market acceptable. The price is at market value, but the coin does not have much eye appeal. The coin did sell by same seller on 1/22/19 and is back up for sale.

It's been dipped in a acid solution a long time ago and has since re-toned. I can tell by the color. Sld's enjoy a a lot of leniency by the tpgs with regards to cleaning. It's called market acceptable grading. The grading companies almost don't have a choice because so many were cleaned in the 1970's to make them more competitive with Morgans. It's good for them but makes selecting a quality sld much harder

There's no rush to buy this one. It's nothing special. Are you dead set on buying an 1870?

I'm not sure some understand what dip actually does or how lighting can impact color in pictures.

Easily could happen....hypothetical situation....a dealer sending in many coins may get preferential treatment on some grading over the average Joe.....that does happen in the dealer world. Most coins in general if not taken out of circulation have been cleaned at some point..They don't always get it right..I remember hearing a story recently...of a coin grader either PCGS or NCG grading an expensive giving it a good grade and then having to buy it back later out of ridicule in the market because it was fake..but that's another story....When I see lines go in a particular direction...I think bristle brush cleaning. This may not be that, but I see lines going down to the right. I'm not saying it's a cleaning though and would like someone to chime in with a definite light acceptable cleaning or no cleaning assessment.

I'm not telling him that. I just think that coin would look great in my 7070.
