In my search for English Hammered coins I keep coming across Medieval French ones that catch my eye. He is one I just purchased. Philip IV Known as The Fair and The Iron King King of France from 1285-1314 He is most noted for the role he played in the destruction of The Knights Templar on Friday 13th 1307, his wars with King Edward I of England of disputed lands in France and a war with the Flemish. He also was in conflict with Pope Boniface VIII for attempting to take over the French clergy, this resulted in the pope transferring the Papal court to Avignon in 1309. AR Denier Parisis A'L'o Rond 19.9mm x 1.05g L.224 Additional information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_IV_of_France

Lovely coin, Ron. Nice addition to your medievals. I like the color. I assume some of that is toning, but perhaps also some debasement? Is it billon?

Thanks Bob, it's listed as silver but I'm sure it's not very high grade. What drew me towards this one was the role he played in the destruction of the Knights Templar.

Yes, a lovely example. These French coins are certainly addictive.

Thanks Andrew, they do seem to be addictive. It didn't start out to be an area that I wanted to get into, but it seems to be turning out that way.

Perhaps a silly question, what does "A'L'o Rond" mean.
My first guess is "round" but that seems too obvious and pointless.

In fact, that's right: "with a round O" Also a descriptor for some for some of the gros from Phillip IV. I guess to set them apart from earlier types with a more oval shaped O?

Excellent coin Ron!....I really like the colouring too...... As you know its not an area I collect 'yet' but judging by the diameter weight ratio these coins are quite thin and fragile? And so the little medieval set grows Nice addition Paul

Also a descriptor for some for some of the gros from Phillip IV. I guess to set them apart from earlier types with a more oval shaped O? OR, thinking further, was it to differentiate the coin from the schyphate coins of Byzantium which would have been the only other coins with approximately the same mass.

I agree that this is a super pick-up fir the type Ron. If/when you settle on purchasing a reference book for these, I'd be happy to let you know my thoughts.
