I was scrolling for release dates on the 2019 coins, and came across this:

https://cashmoneylife.com/us-mint-c...-production/

Is this a reliable source? Are pennies really going away?
Thanks for taking a look!

If you read to the end of the article-the disclaimer indicates that it is a spoof of some sort.

The part of the article that stuck out to me the most is the "penny buy back incentive program" where they are going to melt down all the copper pennies sitting around returned to the government. I wonder what absolute gem of coins will be melted down...

It was a spoof? Interesting. Thanks for pointing that out.
They should've done it on April 1st.

Pennies will soon enough be gone as well as most coinage anyway. Plastic is soon enough going to be all there is.

This is exactly what they're doing in Canada. It's called the 'Alloy Recovery Program' and it makes me shiver in me boots thinking about all those gorgeous copper coins going in the smelter!

Are they going to make wires with the copper?

Plastic coins? Maybe bio-degradable plastic? You dig in your pocket to pay for something, and, "Oops, I could swear I had some money in there."
Rest in Peace

Kidding aside...

Note: As a side effect, expect state and local sales taxes to increase to round up to the nearest nickel as well to make accounting easier for stores and cashiers.
This is the most ignorant thing said in the entire spoof. That is not how sales taxes work.
