On the DDO's for the shield cents the devices look like over inflated tubes. Note the spread on these devices? Look at the centers of the devices, not at the edges of the devices. On the edges of the devices you will find Machine Doubling, Die Deterioration and as on your coin, excess glare drawing the eyes away from the tops of the devices. Note on these images you can tell it has just one light source. Note the light on one side of the devices and shadows on the other side. Light and shadows help us to see what really is going on.
