All,
I purchased a 1964 P mint set. I paid $55 dollars for it. Everything I read and search tells me as a set it is worth about $45. I also researched the individual price for each coin if they were graded. Since the coins came in a set, uncirculated. Would I be better off getting the quarter and half dollar graded and see if they are worth more?
Rest in Peace

First of all you have to post close up and clear photos of obverse and reverse of the mint set to see if any of the coins are candidates for TPG'ing .

to CCF. The coin you are thinking about sending in needs to have a retail value of at least $100 after it is graded to justify all costs involved to have it slabbed.

Did you buy half of a 1964 mint set (uncirculated coins), or did you buy a 1964 proof set (proof coins). Makes a difference on the value, but neither one it worth close to what you paid. Half a mint set would be worth about $10, a proof set $16 to $19. It would cost between $30 and $50 each to have the quarter and half graded and they would have to come back at least MS-67 or PF-68 to make them worth more than the slabbing fees. You are already $35 in the hole. You need to show them in person to someone that is GOOD at grading and if they don't give you the thumbs, up don't throw good money after bad.

@Conder101 nailed it.

The '64 coins are very popular, but also very common. If you bought them for your own pleasure then you did OK, but if you want to sell them at a profit that will be very hard. Please post some photos, we might be able to assess the grades.

The practice of selling "mint sets" that are really only half sets seems to have become really common on ebay in the last couple years.

@Rob Jones-

I just re-read the post. Looks like you did get a half set (Philadelphia only - no Denver coins?). If so, that hurts. Are they at least in the original mint package? A lot of sellers open the original cellophane, cherrypick the high-grade coins and put the other coins in after-market cases. We need pics.

Guess I should have been more specific. The 1964 silver mint set came to me sealed in its original envelope. So I would think they would be uncirculated and receive a high grade.

Without a picture, we can't tell you if it is original or aftermarket put together coin set (there are many of those). This is what an original mint set looks like. A proof set is also shown as the bottom picture. If what you have does not look like either, then you have a put together aftermarket set. These sets are common, and the value of these is too low to justify having them sent for grading.

Neither the Mint set or the proof set was shipped with the envelope sealed.

Look at the envelope it came in, down in the lower left corner does it say 1964 UC or 1964 PC?

I'm more curious about where you are seeing this go for $45. Proof Set or half a Mint Set, nothing should be quoting $45 as a price.
