Hey guys and gals I found this at 1974 S LMC with a weird looking MM. It kind of looks like Machine Doubling but is that possible? Part of liberty and in God looks like Machine Doubling though can someone please help me?

MD can and will affect any and all devices including the mintmark. your coin is normal, mintmark and devices show Machine Doubling, it is well circulated and it is in a very late die state.

This is so confusing because I got told on this forum (on a different coin) that a mint mark prior to 80 something can't be MD. Now I'm going to go back and find it

I think it is a doubled die. The doubling in the motto is just too strong to be Machine Doubling.

It is all Machine Doubling. You just have to ask yourself; "What is doubled?" Machine Doubling reduces the size of the devices, and all these devices are reduced in size less than a normal die. So glad you spotted the Machine Doubling. But where to look on these to tell the difference. If you find yourself looking at the edges of the devices, that is not the right area to look. All you will find on the edges of the devices is Machine Doubling and Die Deterioration. Those two thing are always found there. Look at the centers of the devices and spot the spread of the devices. I was going to post one from that year, but I don't have any. But remember the question: "What is doubled?" If the devices size are not enlarged, then it is some of the worthless doubling and not a doubled die.

It's Machine Doubling, since the size of the devices are reduced in size and it's shelf-like in appearance. This is Machine Doubling. A real actual Doubled will have an increase in size, not a reduction in size. Here's a real Doubled Die for comparison.
Errers and Varietys.

Very heavy MD. Might be a keeper if you want to show some other new numismatists what MD looks like.
