A friend has bet me this is a Doubled Die, obverse and reverse. With my luck at finding anything of value being zip, I'm betting this is die fatigue. What do the experts say?

It's neither. It's a Dryer Coin, which is Post Strike Damage ( PSD). It didn't leave out of the U.S. Mint like that.

E&V, is the doubling that's present DDD or MD?

Hwy14. Great pictures. Light might need some filtering to reduce glare but fantastic. What setup are you using to achieve those great closeup images?

Chafemasterj, it's neither. It has the looks of being through the washer. That's why I think it's a Dryer Coin.

Huh? Maybe spent some time in a rock tumbler or other equipment used for polishing and cleaning things like spent (brass) cartridges? Thanks, Doug.

Thanks chafemasterj, the microscope is a basic e-bay buy but it works off of a Microsoft LifeCam Studio camera. I don't think this is a Dryer Coin, the damage is to localized with the devices while the fields and rim are left unscathed. There is no reason why this couldn't have come from the mint in this condition (see Cherry Pickers Guide fourth edition vol. 1 pg. 365). The photo of the date is looking straight down on the date and not at an angle which causes me to think the strike was a bouncing, glancing strike of a worn out die.
