I have this 1979 S type 1 mintmark Susan B Anthony dollar coin and everything I know about them tells me type 1 S mintmark was only used on proof coins. I have quite a few impaired proof coins and even though they are impaired you still see evidence that it was struck with a proof dies. This coin shows no evidence anywhere that is was struck with a proof die on the obverse and reverse. So for the sake of this post I am also including pics of a 1979 P version of the Susan B Anthony. The S coin will start on pic one then every other one. Thoughts?

Maybe it's a Business Strike? I don't know very much about the Susan B. Anthony dollars, so don't take my word for it.

Yes John1, The type 1 S mintmark was only used on proof and business strikes. The small dollar website say it used this style mintmark on business strikes, another says no. Who knows! At least it's worth a dollar!

In 1979 the type 1 mintmark was used on both business strikes and proofs, the type 2 mintmark in 1979 was used on the proof coins only.

The type 2 mintmark was used on business strikes and proofs in 1980.

In 1981 the mintmark called type 1 is the same as the 1979 type 2 mintmark and it was used for business strikes and most of the proofs. Then the new 1981 type 2 mintmark was introduced on the proofs only.

varietyvista mentions other matters like the wide and narrow borders, but nothing specific on the two mint mark styles used that year concerning, which was in use for proof or business strikes. Thanks, Doug.

Follow up: Conder101 and Coop seen more than I. So you might pay more attention to them.
