Hi Everyone! I recently inherited this coin and I know very little about coins in general, so I need some help. Before we make any decisions about paying to have it professionally graded, trying to sell it, etc., it would be nice to have some input from people who know what they're talking about as to what we actually have here and whether or not it might actually be worth anything. These aren't the best photos (taken in the evening under our dining room light on my cell phone), but hopefully it gives an idea as to the quality of the coin. If anyone can help me to understand what I'm looking at and what I should do with the coin, that would be so very much appreciated - thank you!

What you have is, in fact, a double eagle. This date is common in the condition that you have, and is basically worth about the value of the gold. Not worth sending in for grading.

....to the Community! We look forward to your continued active participation.

You 1888S 20$ gold piece (aka - "double eagle") appears to be in very fine to extra fine condition. There may be some remaining mint luster on the reverse so that's a plus. The obverse looks like it may have been wiped or lightly cleaned. Cleaning coins is a no-no as it usually hurts the value.

There were almost 900,000 of this year/mint mintage so it is not "rare" by any means and does not warrant being slabbed at this time.

In my opinion your coin is worth somewhere around the bullion value.
