Unfortunately, raw coins are very hard to prove ownership of. Even though common sense tells us that ten dates of Seated dimes recovered that match the ten dates you had stolen have to be yours, some scumbag atty will point out that it's possible to put together those ten dates from elsewhere. No explanation for why someone would do that and then spend them...

One thing that can be shown to be yours is paper money. Simply write down the serial number of every note in your collection, and keep them in the computer.

G'day, I think that 'fredd is quite correct.
Something to do with -
"burden of proof",
and "proof beyond reasonable doubt".

Good sharp clear pictures of your coins can be used like a finger print , no two coins have Identical appearances .especially circulated coins but even mint state coins will have undeniable identifiable details.

I have front and back pics of all my slabbed coins. My raw coins I have written down in a ledger. I don't trust keeping info on my computer in case of a crash. I do have all my coin pics stored on a 2G flash drive which I think is a good idea. Some lowlife can still break the coins out of the slabs. Then you have nothing.

No big deal to have them on a flash drive AND a computer.

I agree. Every time I update my computer file, my flash drive gets updated as well.

Ya don't routinely backup your computer? Bad move. Think of the time it would take to recreate your system! There is software available to automatically do such. Well worth the investment.
Then you put the backup, hopefully offsite. In the good old days, I would put backups in the toilet tank - in case of fire.
Also you should have multiple backups. One a month for three months. Gee I could go on forever, and that's a long time, about backups.

Also I would think if you had pictures of your coins that that would help - at least in my collection(not many in mint condition).

I backup all of my computers. I backup the data to an external USB drive daily. I image the system partitions to an external drive weekly. I use multiple drives, so I have multiple backups separated by days/weeks. I rotate the drives between several locations and all are encrypted. Yes, I am paranoid. Yes, this behaviour has saved me more than once!

I need to "document" my collection for OTHER reasons......
Mine cannot be stolen and here's the reason.....

Every day and night, I sit on top of my pile with a loaded handgun and a pit bull.....

Naw...really it's the fact that it's down at the bank in two large safety deposit boxes......(soon might need three !)
There, my collection is fire proof, thief proof, flood proof, environment proof and any other kind of "proof" you can think of !
They CAN'T steal em' !.....

Wasn't there news recently of a bank being swallowed by a giant sinkhole? In Texas, or was it Florida?

Now that is silly. There are way to many people with the same initials. Even if you carved your intire name, there are many with the same name. NO, you have to do as I'm doing. Get a lazer machine and carve a complete serial number, your name, address, phone number, mothers maiden name on the edge of each coin. Then just to make sure, write your shoe size hidden somewhere on the face.
On a serious note. You could take all the photos you want and they will do very little with a stolen coin collection. Complete discriptions plus photos are just as good. You could ask the probably millions of people that have had coins stolen and they would all agree they are gone forever.
NO ONE in a pawn shop around here ask any questions about anything. NO ONE at a flea market ever ask where did you get those coins. NO ONE in a coin store, hobby store, coin show ask where did you get those coins. Even jewlers don't ask anything. So far just in the block I live there have been two homes robbed of coins and the police admitted that they should be considered gone. In many instances coins are taken out of slabs, books, folders, albums and just spent as coins or even taken to a bank and then run through a coin counter.
And paper money? Of course there are serial numbers and dates but if they look like a normal bill, they too will just vanish at similar places. There is a pawn shop near me that deals in coins and has them all the time. If you ask where they came from you'll be told where did what come from. Coins, we don't have any except what is in the cash register and that is the last time you'll be welcome there.
Unfortunately when coins, currency, guns, knives or even sports cards are stolen, they are just gone.
Rest in Peace

Yeah, all I have left of my Morgan and Peace dollar collection are nice, sharp, clear negatives.
