I thought this forum might find this interesting. A friend of mine owns his own financial services consulting firm and they perform a service called 'gold leasing'.
The way he explains it, clients with gold holdings can lease their gold out to other clients at a monthly lease rate (let's say 2%). When they want their gold back, they cancel the lease and the gold is returned.
Here is the catch! The gold coins have to be refined by a certified assayer into 400oz investment bars. He told me that he has sent bags of Soviet stamped gold, krugerrands, old double eagles, bank bars, bolivars, etc etc to the refiners to be processed into 400oz bars. I asked him about Canadian coins and he said that a lot of maples from the 80s have been melted down. He also said a lot of these coins have collector value including a Rabobank bag full of 2005 liberation privy maples.
What a shame! All these coins are being destroyed from history forever!
Sounds like the making of a scam to me. It may take a while to fail but I sure wouldn't want to be at the end of the line waiting for my gold to be returned!
Gold Maples aren't coins, they're bullion. Their collectability is contrived. They are destined to all become bullion value only items. Melting them is simply a matter of ashes to ashes and dust to dust.

Agree. I believe: "If you don't hold it you don't own it."
I was hoping one of these would come up for auction in the Numismatic Company's Gold Auction. I only ever see these selling for $2000+ now. Bah humbug!
