Couldn't find my old thread so I'll just start a new one. Finally, after 15 months of off and on sorting, I am done with my coin inventory. No more surprise bags of coins to count. I now know what I will need to fill some albums. I also have some folders to fill as starter sets for my nephews who will be starting Boy Scouts in the next couple of years, to help them get their coin collecting badge, and get them going on coin collecting. Once I am finished with filling these albums and folders. I will decide which coins to keep and which coins to dump and keep buying more coins, specifically the key dates I need to fill my wheat albums and invest in some of the older silver coins that I don't have very many of. Here are my final inventory numbers:IHP 108 Wheaties 6269 (includes 209 steel) LMC 6755 Lincoln Bicentennial 418 Shield 1083 V nickels 41 Indian Head Nickels 133 Jefferson nickels 3934 (includes 124 Wartime Silver) Westward Journey 262 Modified Nickels 1218 Barber dime 1 Mercury dime 2 Silver Rosies 807 65 - present Rosies 3029 Standing Lib Qtrs 1 Silver Washington Qtrs 450 65-98 Washington Qtrs 1798 Statehood Qtrs 2021 DC & Territories Qtrs 83 ATB Qtrs 384 Walking ½ 4 Franklin ½ 74 90% Kennedy ½ 42 40% Kennedy ½ 106 Clad Kennedy ½ 993 Morgan dollar 2 Peace dollar 1 Ike dollar 235 SBA Dollar 120 Sac Dollar 146 Native Dollar 44 Presidential dollar 802 Silver Eagle 34 1968 & 1969 Mint & Proof Sets 4 Ea. 1970 to 1999 Mint & Proof sets 3 Ea. I am so happy to be done with this portion of my coin project, I was getting bored and burnt out from looking at coin after coin, couple of times I dreamt about it. At times it got to the point that everything I looked at was a double die error... Some of these numbers include S proofs. I have enough to almost fill up 3 albums on most of these coins, and still have enough left over for nephews starter sets. I learned one lesson from all of this, I will never take 20 years off from working on my coins again.

Quote: Sagegirl , can you refresh my memory and tell me how and when you obtained all those coins I started collecting coins way, way, way, way, back in scouts and have always tossed all my change into jars and then once a year I would sort them, About 20 years ago, I wanted to take a couple of years off of coins, but always tossed all my change into those 5 gallon water bottles. Back in November 2017 after the 20 or so years of not touching my collection, I decided it was time to start up again, so I dumped my coins and started sorting, I was also coin roll hunting at the same time. I have never taken any coins back to the bank, just kept dumping them in the water bottles. Besides the coin roll hunting, I have also been making some buys off of ebay and some of my local coin dealers. One thing that helped was I bartended and never cashed in my change.

Oh Ya, almost forgot... I still have a bag of Foreign Coins to go thru, but in no hurry to get to those. I got these from friends who were traveling abroad and gave them some cash to bring me coins and currency from where ever they were headed.

Does your inventory consist of more data than a count of each coin type?

That is a lot, and I mean lot, of coins to have just sitting around. Have you decided what to do with those. So many could be put into Albums and so many just to a bank. Might consider giving to kids on Halloween.

I agree that is a lot of coins and you still have a lot of sorting to do in each category, congrats and have fun.

I've more or less been on the same rampage...been giving away some, selling some at shows and club meetings...something of an inventory reduction since retirement!

Quote: I agree that is a lot of coins and you still have a lot of sorting to do in each category, congrats and have fun I started off by sorting my coins in my coin sorting/counting machine, (I have the Cassida C200) That sorted the coins by denomination, then hand sorted all coins by decade, then by year, and finally by mint mark. For example on my wheat cents; 1924 38 1924 D 0 1924 S 7 1909 12 1909 VDB 10 1909 S 2 1909 S VDB 0 Wartime Silver Jefferson; 1943 P 41 1943 D 2 1943 S 11 And so on. As I look at my coins for placement in the albums, I will be looking under the microscope for error coins. I started out in the beginning doing this, but decided to wait until the inventory was done. Also while sorting all these coins, I pulled out all the cull coins and put them all into a separate bag, so I don't have to deal with them later. These cull coins are not included in my inventory.

I use a great free program called Libre office to keep track of all of mine in a spreadsheet. I have to because I coin roll hunt to make sets for 6 people (4 of them grandkids). Anyway that is a chunk of coins to go through all at one time. Congrats!

Someday I might transfer to a spreadsheet, or maybe some type of coin inventory software. But for now, the Red Book and my notebooks work just fine.
