One quick question...would an over mintmark be consider a variety/mint error/etc etc? For example, a 1949 D/S Jefferson nickel...If I were to submit it, would I have to add on the extra $10+ fee that most TPGs charge for a variety? Or will they confirm it as an "D over S mintmark" and add that to the label?

Sorry if this is a n00b question...I've been entertaining the idea of joining a TPG (most likely PCGS) and I wanted to know as much as I can before doing so...thanks in advanced.

It's considered an over mintmark or OMM. I believe it's a variety. I have a PCGS 64 1954 S/D 5C. They do not state "mint error" on the slab.

Yes, you will have to pay for the variety service if you want it slabbed with a variety notation.

You should also check to make sure the TPG recognizes the variety you are submitting. Each service has varieties they recognize and if you submit a variety not on their list they will be happy to accept the extra fee and you will get back a slab without the variety ID.

Condor is right; different TPGs have different policies about variety attribution. NGC for example does not recognize Breen varieties. I sent in a micro mintmark Carson City half dollar that has been assigned a Breen number and paid for the attribution. When I got my coin I saw that there was no varity attribution on the label. I contacted NGC and they explained the "no Breen" policy. They did credit me for the $7 variety fee I had paid.
