I noticed that a collector in the Kennedy reverse proof thread suggested that coin collectors disregard coins with special finishes. Is that really true? I only collect Roosies, but I would think that (for example) Jefferson nickel collectors would hold the two matte proof finishes from the 1990s. In my dime set, here are the finishes I do and don't collect separately: - I do have the 1950-1964 proof dimes in a Capital Plastics holder separately from the circulating P dimes that are in the Dansco album. - I don't collect the 1965-1967 business strikes separately from the SMS dimes, I can't tell the difference. - I do collect the 2005-2010 satin finish dimes from the mint sets separately from the business strikes. - I do collect the 2017-S enhanced uncirculated dime separately from the usual 2017 PDSS dimes. Other Roosies that I've collected which don't have slots in the album are the 1964 proof with pointed 9, the 1981-S Type II proof, the 2015-P reverse proof and 2015-W silver proof. I'm still missing the 1982 no P and the proof no S varieties, but I do buy lottery tickets occasionally. Edited by scott7721 02/18/2019 2:49 pm

I think it's just another ploy from the mint to make more money from the mint collecting public . The more special effects that they create the more collectors will have to have them in their collections . I for one don't give a rats arm if a new proof coin is produced with an enhanced satin reverse or not .

fully with both of the comments above. Concur that I as well do not give a 'rats arm' about all/any of the 'new special coins' being churned out by the US Mint. Also concur that each of our collecting objectives is unique and personal - so everyone gets to choose for themselves. Collect what makes you happy.

I was just thinking about this as I noticed the new varieties of ATB Quarters now coming out. S uncirculated, S enhanced uncirculated, S proof, S silver, S reverse proof. I think the S uncirculated is the dumbest idea in mint history! Not to mention satin and matte in other coins. All I am interested in is a mint mark from each mint and a silver example. If the mint wants to make a more collected coin, add a circulated or even proof coin from West Point. That I would collect!

2018 was the first year since 1963 that I did not update my album sets. There's just too much stuff. PDS business strike, S clad proof, S silver proof, reverse proof (enhanced set the year before)and multiple quarters for the last 20 years. I can always get any of it if I change my mind but there's just too much.

It's your collection and your decision which items to add to it. If you're happy with your collection, that's all that matters.

Since I only collect coins, those things made with the intent that they should circulate as money, I have no need for any of those "special" finishes. But if you like tham and want to add them to your collection be my guest. Collect what YOU like, don't collect something just because someone else says you should.
