They must have been kind of bored as they really did not pick any interesting letters to place around the bust. Mostly "I's" with an "X" here and there.

I like the detail on this coin, at least they tried to make it look like and official issue.

The fabric of this coin intrigues me.
What is the weight and approximate diameter?

Nevertheless, I still believe that is a genuine coin of contemporary barbarous manufacture, of similar fabric to many Roman colonial coins with Greek legends.

'Creative Celts' - not much like the celts to issue a full size barbarous piece! I thought these ones came from the Balkans. I do find it interesting that they go for Is and Xs so often - why not at least give the legend a go? Some of the illiterate western barbarians ended up quite good at letter-like squiggles.

Love it - I would guess it's imitating Constantine?

Here's my official example.

Constantine's reform of 318 was a significant economic event. According to Bastien ('Imitations of Roman Bronze Coins, A.D. 318-363', ANSMN 30, 1985), the creation of a new nummus (Victoriae Laetae Princ Perp) and the demonetization of the existing folles resulted in acute coin shortages. These shortages stimulated production of illicit imitations in Britain, Gaul and the Balkans. The op coin is an example of a class of Balkan imitations which began to appear on the market 15 or 20 years ago. The treatment of the "legends" is always distinctive. I find them rather appealing.

After reading the above post, my opinion has changed somewhat.

I must admit, I haven't seen a barbarous imitation of this period, with this kind of fabric before.

sel_69l;

18 mm, 3.26 grams and it is from a large lot in this past auction from Roma Numismatics that just got to me this week.
What also is funny is normally a person might want to remove the encrustation on the reverse at the bottom to find the mint mark of a coin. But in this case you can just assume it will be "X's" and "I's" at best so I am sure no one will ever see the need.
