Newbie here so please bear with me.

Going through my 1968 Pennies last night and I came across this 1968 S Penny. The mint mark was first a small D and then a large S was placed over it. I used a 500X microscope to take the photo and you can see the small D plain as day. So my question is this a common error in 1968 pennies.

So please give me your feed back, since I always enjoy learning. Also I have some other error coins that are very interesting.

The mint mark punch was damaged. Thus creating a fold on the two areas you are looking at. Here is an example from another site:
http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/...ie_state=mds
On this coin it is a RPM, but not from the damaged mint mark punch. It is on the west side of the mint mark. A damage mint mark punch that is continued to be used can affect many dies. Even on different denominations. So it is not an over mint mark issue, but a damaged mint mark punch that is the cause of the issue on your coin.
Here is another one that is from another site:

This one is listed as a north RPM. But you can see the mint mark punch damage. On this site it shows two other RPM, that doesn't have the mint mark punch damage. The probably is that when they add the mint mark the dies are already hardened. So adding the mint mark into a harden die will cause the punches to break down quicker:

They are different! Mine the D is flat on the bottom straight line and it goes all the way out to the end of the S on the top. I know you are probably right but they id sure does look like a D and not a damaged S.
