Aloha Friday!

I've had this 1582 Maley Gross for a little while and am trying to pinpoint the variety / mint. This one is different than the 4 listed on Numista, so hoping the Family might be able to advise.

The reverse has the Rosette's which numista shows for the Joachimsthal. That being said, on the obverse, it is missing the X of Rex about 11:55. However, my coin has a G a couple letters prior which Prague does not, and my coin has the E of rEx for which Budweis and Kuttenburg do not (or X).

Any ideas? Simply another variety of Joachimsthal or a better story here?

Appears to be a common issue of Rudolph II. Spence would be able to provide more information.

@C82, despite Ron's kind words, I'm not sure that I can help too much. This coin is too recent to appear in Frynas and yet Bohemia isn't in my 3rd Edition of 16th Century German Coins by Krause. I'm hoping that one of our European colleagues will weigh in, but my uninformed opinion is that the minor difference in inscription are not necessarily indicative of the mint. Rather, the floral design elements to either side of the crowned monogram on the rev seems to be the minmark. You have rosettes and so I think that Joachimsthal is correct.

I'm sadly lacking in catalogs, but I did notice this is exactly the same lettering as in the Saurma plate for this type: http://www.saurma.info/d/d183.htm

So, perhaps as mentioned in the prior post, it is a normal variant in the lettering.

From my experience with Polish trojaks of the same era, there were often lettering variations like this for a given type from the same mint, sometimes even in the same year.
