I noticed this a while back when looking for doubling in a 2017 Philadelphia Shield Cent and I've seen it once or twice before and looking at 2015. It kind of reminds me of an expansion joint in a concrete bridge. I'm thinking it may have something to do with an aging die but at this point I'm just guessing at this point. I had thought the coin perspective until I saw this but now thinking maybe it's some strange manifestation of Die Deterioration. Interesting that the same thing does not happen on the e in we if this can be attributed to Die Deterioration.

Kind of unfortunate given what looks to be happening near the center other devices in the word Liberty. The bee and the photograph I thought was exhibiting a close spread... Who knows maybe it still is.

You would be correct in guessing it's Die Deterioration. It's really common, especially on these shield cents.

Actually it is on the wrong side to be Die Deterioration. it is weaker Machine Doubling. Other areas may also be affected, but they would also be affected on the right side if it is Machine Doubling. (left side of the coin, bust, date?)

Man I can't find that thing anywhere eye looks for probably an hour and a half when I got back to the house last night. I know it's around somewhere and once I find it I'll get the necessary images. That said I don't remember a lot of excess Machine Doubling on the right hand side of the coin. I believe I had a full set of front and back images as well, unfortunately I'm having trouble locating them as well. I think I shot those images with my microscope so they're likely on my laptop and not my phone. To be continued...

I looked at my original post by the way and had to laugh... I think my smartphone is getting dumber and going deaf. The talk to text used to be on point maybe time for an upgrade.
