Hello and thank you for your assistance. I am sending in some coins to PCGS for grading and am not sure about this 1928 Peace dollar. The Obverse and Reverse have different toning.
The reverse is natural and subtle. However, the obverse is dark and in a non-uniform pattern. It is dark brown/blue with subtle iridescence that I tried to capture in the photos. Also has swirl patterns. I do not want to pay the cost of grading if it is obviously a detailed grade with artificial toning. I've not seen this type of pattern and not only on one side of the coin. Seeking your experience and suggestions. Also though about sending through their cleaning program? No experience here.

Thanks for responding so quickly GrapeCollects. DO you typically see linear areas through the coin that miss the toning. I was trying to image storage options that would have excluded this diagonal on the obverse but could not think of any? Best seen on the 4th picture. Thanks again.

Could have sat in a drawer for a long time with something laying partially on top of it.

thank you both. Based on your experiences I will be sending it in to PCGS, along with the 1922 No-D Strong reverse that I had posted last year and some others.

to me it appears that the lines across the portrait look like fingerprint or palm print where oils were transferred to the coin and somewhat protected those areas from oxidation

I think a palm makes sense. I did not discriminate finger sized swirls.

cool enough coin...

borders on the "ugly" side - in my opinion...
just personal taste...

I agree and think it is oils from the palm/fingers that provide those swirls. Give CSI a call - maybe they can tell you which palm to smack for doing that!

I like it sooo much, I'd drop it in a tub of ezest in a heart beat. If you haven't noticed, I don't like toned coins.

@NDBirdman, blast white only or do you like rim toners? Or lighter colorful ones?

from the rim pic it looks like the coin isn't flat and may be bent

The pics on this coin are all over the map. Some look decent, others show these toning stripes, and others even suggest wear. I cannot imagine it coming back straight-graded, but even if it does, it is an unattractive specimen with a greatly diminished market value.
