With it's long "tail", the "3" in the date is very odd on this specimen, which came out of an old collection classified as an "error". I can't come up with a reasonable explanation of why it might be as it is based upon anything that could happen at the mint. I'm inclined to attribute it to some sort of bizarre post strike damage, but I kind of liked the way it looked nonetheless. The rest of the coin is unremarkable.

@LC, I wonder if a similar damage mechanism from your recently posted 1941 applies to this coin as well. I'm pretty sure that I can pick out the faint image of the remnant lower section of the number 3 when I enlarge and enhance your pic.

I agree, although we have a fuzzy image but you can still make out the direction the metal on the right side of the Three has been pushed to the left. It is a damage.
