I see the US Mint is offering P and D mint rolls of he 2001 Kennedy half two roll set for $ 32.95.

Guess this is unusual for the int to do this anyone think this is a good buy should I get two or a waist of money?

I like the recent Kennedy rolls. I have a complete set back to about '98, including mint marks. None of them have very high mintages. For some reason the mint still has the 2001's. That may mean that nobody wanted/wants them, or maybe they found a room full of them.
Rather than recommend one roll or another, I would recommend that collectors assemble short Kennedy sets from the last fifteen years or so. I would seek out very high grade mint state coins, say MS 67 if you can find them. Not slabbed coins, but raw ones. You'll have to educate yourself about grading if you aren't already, but I think high grade Mint State Kennedys are bound to go up in value.

This is the explanation the mint gave for the release of the 2001 JFK half dollars.

Quote:
The United States Mint is opening the vault and offering never before released 2001-dated (P) Kennedy half dollars! To complete this offer, the United States Mint is including 2001-dated (D) Kennedy half dollars in the two-roll set as the 2001 (D) were only released in small quantities in limited areas of the country. Your collection of Kennedy half dollars can now be complete with the purchase of these coins.

Since the mint has been selling both rolls for the last 3 years, I'm not so sure that that it will increase in value in the near future.

Well.....the 2001 "P" was not issued for circulation.(according to the RedBook)
So, the "D" is released to complete the "set" of two rolls I guess.
I got this two roll set myself last year......what the heck, I'll find out in 30 or 40 years if it was a good buy or not, the way I see it. It wasn't that expensive for me ........and I thought it was significant enough to do it.

The total mintage for 2001 is about the same as 2000- 40 million. That is a solid number if they are circulating but it is huge for a coin not intended to circulate. My theory is that the 2001 halves were going to circulate but someone at the Mint/Dept of Treasury/Federal Reserve/whatever deemed the current supply as sufficient and decided to discontinue circulating new half dollars. The Mint was then sitting on a large pile of half dollars already minted and they could only be disposed of to collectors, not into commerce so they are still being sold.

Yeah, the mintage number is just as large......so that part may make the "future value" less than desirable.......but .....the fact remains that they "weren't" released for ciculation, and so the only way "the common collector" could ever get one would be through the Mint's website or in "sets". (the "P" mint) And 30 years from now, it "may" be something interesting to have when that option is no longer there. And not many people are going to buy them from the Mint and then circulate them......so, it'll be something "you" have that others won't have.
The Mint may keep selling these indefinately, until they're gone, or hopefully they'll melt em' down or something in the next year or two......either way, I'm okay with the purchase.

Even if it drops in value, you know it will always be worth $20 :D

Collectiong Moderns or Ultra Moderns is not going to be a "valuable enterprise" in my lifetime most likely.........but future family members may appreciate my efforts in this endeavor.
Gold and Silver might.......but not the 2001 P Kennedy half !.......

yeah I bought a bag I think back in 2006 that has the p and d in it. The reason I bought it was The RedBook listed the 2001p with a mintage of 21,200,000 and it had the MS-65 price at 10 dollars so I bought a bag.
