1914-S Buffalo Nickel, Unslabbed

Nice coin...solid 64, shot at 65.

The obverse has nice detail on the Indian's eye, braid, central design of the long feathers, date, and central ribbon. The strike weakness is more peripheral than central, and the hairline at the cheekbone is well defined for a branch mint teens Buffalo. Other than a couple small rim dings, the obverse is spectacular. The reverse shows a well defined horn, details on the eye and hair on the buffalo's head. The tail is only a little weak, and some of the details on the hair on the buffalo's back and beard are a bit soft, but not abnormally so for the date. There is a contact mark at the high point of the buffalo's back and a few contact marks between the front and back legs. EPU reflects the omnipresent clash mark, and there are die polishing signs below the Indian's chin for the same reason.

There are a few areas that are difficult to see because of the lighting, but I definitely don't see anything that would keep this below a 64 straight grade, unless it gets graded on a Monday and the the grumpy grader thinks the softer strike knocks it down a notch to a 63. That, to me, seems to be the big question mark. Again, this strike doesn't seem to be anywhere near a two-point weak strike deduction, and there is a decent shot at 65 being the starting point, rather than 64. My personal grade would be a no-problem 64.

Again, you have a truly beautiful coin.

I'm just not seeing nice original chart wheel luster. It seems a bit dull. I'm on the fence with this one, AU-58 or MS-63. Photos are not where I can tell for sure.
