It is Aluminum, 30.1 mm in diameter, and uniface.
the hole appears to be as made.

There are quite a few for sale on ebay ... according to one seller 'These tea tokens were used within the Australian Government for staff to obtain "cups of tea" from the Government tealady'.

Confirmed - it's "T for Tea".

I don't think they were actually in use for very long; most I have seen have been in Unc or near-Unc condition.

Thanks. I figured that the Australians would know. The purpose of the token seems extremely quaint!

You'd buy as many tokens as you thought you'd need to get you from one pay to the next. I used them in the early 60's and again in the late 60's to early 70's. Could be used for coffee as well. If I remember correctly, it was 2 tokens for 1 cup coffee.

I had 2 stints working for the ATO.

@Nevol, that is some great information. 1 for tea, 2 for coffee. Do you remember how much a token cost?>

Sorry oriole, I can't remember that much detail, but they were very cheap, consequentially everyone used them. I still have one somewhere.

Brings back memories, I well remember them!

In 1973, as a trainee civil engineer, working for the Australian Commonwealth Government,
I actually used these on a daily basis.
They were exchanged at my work desk for a cuppa tea or coffee, but the Tea Lady, who pushed around a stainless tea tolley.

I clearly remember Jess, who was about 65 years old, who had the thickest Glaswegian (Scottish) accent I have ever heard.

We gave her a lot of good humoured cheek. We copped the lot back, with interest.

Well, my Aussie friends, I never dreamed that this token would bring back such memories.

Why do some have the Star Punched Out and others don't?
