I was perusing e-bay (I do have an MT life). And I came across a posting of a US 3 Cent. Thought I'd take a quick look

The date does not look good to me.
What do ya'll think?

What do you think is wrong with it? There is a scuff across the lower rim and date but that is all I see and I do not really see any difference when compared to another 1852. There is a slight position difference but that should be due to the fact that the dates were added to the dies by hand in that time period.

I would say something is going on with the date because it looks like someone used sand paper on it and I have no idea why. I don't know if it is a altered date or what but someone tried to do something there

There is nothing that would indicate that altering this coins date would produce a more valuable coin for the date .

whatever happened to the date either on purpose or by some unknown accident it amounts to damage and actually makes the coin less valuable .

Rest in Peace

Not much point in altering to the commonest date in the series. If it was mine, it would be headed to NCC to be returned to brilliant.

Harshly cleaned...very common...not desirable in that state.

Of course there are always other possibilities.
For example the date was left off in 1852 and just added by the Mint a few years ago.
In 1852 the Mint was experimenting with radioactive dating so people could see the dates in the dark.
An artist painted the date with white paint to make the coins look more artistic.
The inside of that coin is hollowed out and there is a small battery and light inside just under the date.
This one is made in China and the Lead date is melting.
Rest in Peace
