Hi. I discovered this coin in my pocket change. I've searched the internet for information but haven't found anything like it to compare it to. Comments from this forum would be greatly appreciated. Addtl info: I think the planchet is copper. The wording is for a Wheat penny. BUT the coin is the size of a dime. There are no ridges around the rim. The word LIBERTY is on the front side near where it should be but the L is at the edge of the coin. A 9 then 4 can be seen near where the date should be but I don't see the first or fourth date digit. The back side is.... what it is. Check it out, let me know what you think. Many Thanks !

We had a similar coin a few days ago, posted here: http://goccf.com/t/342898 People have been known to grind down cents to place them in dime rolls to cheat someone. Most likely PMD

Just a badly mutilated cent that has probably been ground down. It didn't look like that when it was minted so it is just damage. PMD

Just a heavily damaged coin beaten to a pulp. It's a cull coin now.
Errers and Varietys.

But why did they create this? I lived back when you could get a 12 oz. soda out of a machine for 10 cents. A seven ounce soda you could get for 7 cents. (7 up) So if you put in a coin like this (I never did this though) into a 7 ounce machine, you got back Three Cents change. These were bottles back then with a 2 cent deposit for the bottles. (Later 3 and then 5 cents) 1950-1970 era.
