Hello, CCF! Dave here in sunny Cambridge, Ontario. I'm sure this topic comes up often, but I searched the last couple pages and didn't see a recent example.

I've inherited my dad's large coin collection, and while I very much appreciate it, I know that it'd be better in the hands of other collectors, and that my mom could use the money after his passing.

I mean to take pictures, but there's...a lot. He has those Proof-Like sets back into the 70's. I've spotted gold maple-leaf coins, olympic coins. He has binders with on-card coins for every denomination. Banknotes for the dominion/bank of Canada. There's so many items that just taking pictures is daunting.

Heck, I started doing an excel sheet but got scared.

Are there any reputable or recommended dealers or consigners or auctioneers that would get me anywhere close to the value of this stuff?

I've been on coinsandcanada and slowly picking out stuff that's not worth more than face value/melt value, but I think I'm gonna need help. I'm in Cambridge, ON, but I don't mind driving a bit.

Sorry for the novel, but I very much appreciate everyone's help.

-Dave N

edit: And Stamps too, but...that's it's own adventure.

If it's big enough, I'd suggest contacting Tom at London Coin Centre, I'd trust him to bits about giving you a fair estimation and price on your coins. A trip to London as a whole would not be a bad idea, there's three different stores that could give you a price. That said, Tom's your guy. Toronto is another option, bu honestly not a great one IMHO.
P.S. look at the top right hand corner of your screen, yellow ad, that's him!

Be very careful about any place that you take them to get an estimate and then have the same person want to buy them. Estimates are fine, but estimates and buying needs some special care/thinking.

to CCF. Sorry for your loss. I recommend going to at least three different coin shops to get values and then of course go with the highest. There might be a CCF member near you that might help as well. Give it a bit.

How many boxes full of stuff do you have? I am thinking of how long it may take a store to give an estimate. You may need to make an appointment.

It would speed things if could pre-sort by type of item.

For example, put all the gold together, all the mint sets together, loose unsorted coins together by denomination.

If you have identified things you think are just worth face value put them together.

I am not sure where the OP could go to get an estimate of what they could be sold for from someone who is not interested in buying. A retail value for insurance or estate purposes is one thing, but anyone who knows what they could sold for would generally be in the business of buying and selling. Of course we need to be careful, but every coin store will be interested in buying the product-this is their business.

There is a well known and respected Coin Dealer about 15 minutes from you in Kitchener.
I have bought and sold with them for years as have some of the other members here.
They are Colonial Acres on Victoria Street.
You will find then fair to deal with.

Century coins and stamps in Mississauga (which I have had only a few dealings with) is a relatively short drive. I'd recommend getting several appraisals and be clear to the dealer that you are looking for several opinions. Also, don't sell to the first offer. Metro coin and banknote is also a option, although a further drive into Etobicoke (west Toronto).

I've found that the Toronto stores have an unfortunate tendency to need to pay rent. I.E. They underbid on buying. Colonial Acres, I've never dealt with, but I've heard good things about.
London is a good bet overall. Give the dealers a call first. Never hurts.

If the only offers you get for the coins is around buillion prices, you would be better off selling them here after you post the required number of posts. You shouldn't have a hard time getting at least spot price here.

Wow, thank you for the quick responses, everyone! I'll try those few places mentioned. I understand anyone looking to resell isn't going to offer straight market value, I hope there's enough here to at least interest someone.

Everyone here is so friendly and knowledgeable, I really appreciate it! I'll take some pictures, half of the fun I had poking through everything was a briefcase just of "supplies".

I'm sure everyone here would be interested to see pictures. Good advice from prior postings to go to at least a couple of dealers and to give them a call ahead of time to make an appointment. Note that dealers will probably give you an average of 50% of the retail list value of the items, so don't be surprised/offended. You may be able to get more for items by listing them on ebay, but that takes more work from your standpoint. Good luck!

!!WARNING, MEGA POST INCOMING!!

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
This was a page of tokens, slugs, and "collector" coins.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
There's lots of collecting supplies and tools I'd love to go to a good home or new/young collector.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
There are a decent amount of pre-Canada coins from Upper Canada, Newfoundland, PEI, NS, and NB.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Plenty of the items inside were "related" to the hobby - membership cards, pins, and club tokens and badges.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Hard to see, but this is a bag of various foreign coins. Mexican, Greek, German, Netherlands, and a few odd ones. Some of these are sleeved, many are just loose.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Newfoundland coins - several pages

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Of course he also had a set of Canadian Tire cash.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
There are a few nice-condition foreign banknotes in the collection

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
THE BIN (Scary!)

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
There were many of these Proof-sets.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
There are a few USA banknotes in a binder, in excellent shape, but I'm not sure if they're particularly valuable as far as their value.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
One of several of the "Olympic" sets that were in the bin.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
This was the Canada half-dollar binder

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Half-dollar binder - this seemed fairly complete with only a few years missing up to modern time.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
This was a second bag of foreign coins - there didn't seem to be much theme to them, except they were mostly Greek, German, Mexican, and the Netherlands. A few Francs.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Canadian Nickels - this seemed fairly complete, although he had some "duplicates" from some years, presumably alternate designs

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Canadian Nickels - see other shots, but this seemed fairly complete with only a few years "missing"

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Canadian Dimes - like the others, the binder seemed fairly full, with only a few "holes".

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Canada dollar coins - these are all sleeved and well-marked, and most coins are in excellent shape.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Canadian Quarters!

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Canadian Quarters part 1 - these were all well-kept, sleeved, and most are in great shape.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
There were many of these "collector" boards for quarters, some Millenium ones, and similar. I have all of the cards for the ones that weren't in them, but MOST were still in their original packaging.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
There are these proof/specimen sets for every year back through the early 70's. All of them have their sleeves and packaging.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Some years have an extra Proof coin, but not all. These all have their packaging.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Some years have an extra Proof coin, but not all. These all have their packaging.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Dad had several sets of these olympic coins, from what seems to be both Montreal and Calgary.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
What's this...?

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
It's another Olympic set, there are several of these, all with their packaging intact.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Oh, no.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
There are several of these less-organized books - I think these were my Uncle's, who passed them on to my dad.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
I think these are near-complete - these are the proof-life sets for Canada, and date back to 1960.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
I think these are near-complete from 1960 on - these are the proof-life sets for Canada, and date back to 1960.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Pennies! There aren't many holes in this binder, so I'm not sure what was missing.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Canada pennies! This seems fairly complete, with not many holes "missing"

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
There are a few "misc" binder pages like these, that I'm not sure what the theme was.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
This was what I could only describe as a "misc" page, I'm not sure what the theme of this one was (if any)

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
This was another "misc" page, I'm not sure what the theme was, or if these were errors or something else.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Most years back to the mid-70's have these in-box Proof sets - most have their sleeves and packaging, but they're all in perfect shape. Several years (but not all) have "special edition" or alternate sets.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
25-cent notes from the dominion.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
There were a fair amount of tubes of what I only assume are coins for their silver - the one I'm holding are Nickels, all pre-1967.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
There were several of these long boxes of "misc" stuff, presumably just items dad hadn't sorted yet. Some foreign coins, some Canadian stuff, and some were sleeved. The pennies just seemed random.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Oh my god, the BIN.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
This was a binder of "misc" things - some USA coins, a Planchet, and some collector tokens and municipal tokens/dollars.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
These were several items I could only figure they'd be worth their face value - I doubt anyone's collecting old school hundreds.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
50's - several pages

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
5's - several pages

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
2's - several pages

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
This was one of a few of these gold coins I'd mentioned. The others are mostly boxed.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
10's - several pages

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
There's a fair amount of 1-dollar bills, but most of the Canadian ones' value seems close to face.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
1 dollar notes - several pages

OH NO, STAMPS

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Dad had many of these "collection" stamp books, dating back from the mid-70's to 2008. These are complete and in perfect shape.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
There's lots of "binder" stamps as well, from Canada, the US, and some foreign ones too.

Large,-Large-Collection-Of-My-Dad's---Mega-Update-With-Photos!
Oh man, the stamps.
