maybe a capped die of some sort? I am no error expert so I could be wrong

Nice find by your son! I'm not an expert either, but how does the diameter compare to a regular dime?
If it's larger, could it be broadstruck or some other collar problem?

It's broadstruck and a very collectible error coin. I don't know how much they are worth exactly, but my guess would be at least $15-$20.

Broadstruck means it was struck without the retaining collar around the coin. The pressure of the dies slamming together pancaked the coin out to what appears to be larger than cent size. Very nice.

To me, it almost looks like there is something minted above the Y in LIBERTY. Maybe I'm just seeing things though!
