I live Snowflake, AZ and this morning while trying out my new Metal Detector I found a Trade Coin, the front shows "Good for 5 (cent sign) in Trade, the rear has "The (cannot read the rest) arched across the top, midway reads "Broadway" below that "Fresno" and below that "Calif."

I have searched the net all day and cannot find anything that matches this coin. I know that coin is in real bad shape, but I'm more interested with the novelty of it than the worth as Snowflake was a Cattle Town and a route from Silver City, NM to Winslow, AZ.

@Makakoa85937, first welcome to CCF. Second, that is a neat find that you have there. My go-to website for identifying tokens is tokencatalog.com and when I search that site using the keywords BROADWAY FRESNO CALIF., I don't get a hit for your token. As you can see, the only 5 cent piece made in aluminum with those words is from "Casino Pool Hall". Hopefully others here can get you an exact attribution.

Cool find. Just wanted to welcome you to the Forum. You've come to a phenomenal place to share and learn. Enjoy!

Edit: I checked Numista which I'm sure you did and came up with nothing.

As a detectorist, that is half the fun of it. It is likely a token from a store (once) located on Broadway street in Fresno. I'm sure the answer is underneath the crud/corrosion on the obverse. A toothpick would be a good way to start.

That is a good find. Most of the "good for" tokens were issued in numbers of a few thousand at most, sometimes a few hundred. Once the issuing store closed the tokens had limited value so often very few survived. You might have the only one!

If you can scrape enough of the corrosion away to identify the store, you should put it in the token catalogue.

@Spence
Thanks for that link to the token catalog. I have a token from my great-great grandfather's store that needs an image in the catalog, so I'm going to upload it.

There's always something to be learned here.
