This Sunday I'm heading south to go to a coin show in Windsor, Ontario. I've gone before but several years ago, and I'm curious if any changes have been made as far as border crossing WITH COINS. About 95% of my search list involves Canadian silver coins; 1800's Vickies and recent commemoratives. Previously, I've just purchased clad coins and I'm pretty sure I had no problem coming back to the States with those; but I've heard stories that precious metals have different rules. My questions are as follow..... A) Is there a price limit for purchasing coins in the few hours I'll be in Canada (sales-tax)? B) Will I have to file a claim at the border for any silver coins I buy? C) Can I actually cross the border home with Canadian silver? D) Are 1800's silver coins officially Canadian coinage; or are they technically English coins since they were minted in England? E) Aside from question 'A' concerning sales tax, is there a price limit on ANY Canadian silver coinage crossing the border? F) I'm thinking of bringing some US and Canadian coins I already own with me to sell/trade. Is it possible I can bring them to Canada but NOT bring them back to Michigan with me? I know some of my questions might seem stupid but if you can give me honest and sincere answers I'd truly appreciate it. I'm really hoping that some items in my want list can be found there, as most dealers here in the Detroit shows rarely bring any modern proof/specimen/commemorative coins to sell. Thanks in advance for any responses!

https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/de...TlpqKjFvYW8=If you have any doubt just declare it or ask the customs officer at the border. They're looking for drugs, smugglers, illegals, and money laundering type things not people going to a coin show unless you're doing large transactions. Even then you just have to declare it

Yeah, I wouldn't worry. If asked, declare what you are carrying and all will be fine. They really don't care about some Canadian silver crossing the border and why should they? The RCM ships straight to the US all the time.

Well, I feel a little more at ease now, I guess I'll find out tomorrow. I've heard stories from some dealers who say sometimes it depends on what booth you get in line for. Sometimes they are very pleasant and others are a real pain in the mule.
I just put $8 of Canadian coinage in two 'pill bottles' to pay for my toll in and out of Canada. (Most of the coins are from Coinstar finds here in the US, or lower grade coins from my collection that I've upgraded with AU or better specimens).

Dealers and the majority of collectors will have a different experience. Dealers will be crossing with 10s of thousands of dollars worth of inventory if not six figures or more whereas most collectors would maybe have a couple thousand dollars worth. Either way though they still get through

Well, everything went pretty well with my Canadian coin show visit, although I did have a little trouble getting there. When I crossed INTO Canada, I had to pull over and get my car searched. The two guys basically took about 10 minutes, mostly just checking the trunk. Then I had to take paperwork they gave me to the customs office to get stamped and given to them. After that, I found that the 'fancy' Garmin I bought last fall does NOT work in Canada; even though when I bought it I was 'guaranteed' it worked in all of North America; with included Canada and Mexico. So anyways; I got lost! What should have been a ten minute drive took a full hour until I finally found the actual street (and building) the coin show was at; and that was mainly due by using a PAPER map that I was able to get at the 'Visitor Center' I stumbled upon during my search. (Nothing better than an old fashioned paper map). Anyways, once I got to the show everything was great! It wasn't really big but I was able to find lots of items. The Canadian selection was far superior to any coin show (even the major yearly shows) I've gone to here in the US. I didn't bring enough cash (normal with my income) to get most of the Victoria's I needed (and no; I didn't see the 1906 small crown quarter which is on my want list), but I was able to pick up some beautiful modern commemoratives. I acquired a 2008 O'Canada gift set, and a 2006 Toronto Maple Leaf gift set; even though I really only need the quarters in them. I also got a 1997 specimen Loon dollar, along with a 2010 Royal Canadian Navy BU silver dollar. I was mainly looking for a proof navy dollar, but the price was so good (ie: cheap) that I couldn't resist. My best pick-up was the 2007 enameled Thayendanegea proof silver dollar. It looks great and the price was even better! I ended my trip by driving to two Walmarts in the outskirts of Windsor to check on 2019 Hot Wheels cars I buy for my disabled friend. I found both stores but they didn't have any new cars there. I did stop at a McDonalds for lunch; found out they DO NOT have a dollar menu in Canada. What normally costs me $4.24usa here cost me $10.80can there. Well, at least it was tasty, and I used more of my 'junk' Canadian coins to pay for my meal. There's another coin show in Windsor on May 5th, and I'll definitely be going to that one too.

Sounds like a great trip Atticguy. I wish I were close enough to go to a big show like that. I have visited the Canadian Mint in Winnipeg a few times, but my wife doesn't approve of those visits anymore lol.
It's amazing how much more McDonald's charges us for the same thing! It doesn't stop me though.. those fries.. Well, thanks for that. I guess I know where I'm going for lunch!

Glad you had a good time in the Great White North and found some good deals, with the exchange at what it is right now I'm surprised more US aren't coming over.
As for the GPS when you got it did it ask you what you wanted for maps when you started it up, if not go in and reload the maps for US and Canada in your area.
Mine works on both sides but I did have to load the right area.

I have heard of a story some years back of a dealer's entire inventory being held at the border for months. It nearly drove that dealer into bankruptcy. I would never cross the border with hundreds of thousands in coins, gold, and cash. I don't care how many people say they have never had a problem.

If you are going to cross the border twice (going, and coming back), ask what the regulations are, when crossing the border on the going trip. Get printouts of any regulations that may affect you.
I have had bad experiences with petty officious border officials before, but that was in India.
Nevertheless, I feel that there will be few or no problems in your case, when crossing the border either way.

Quote: I would never cross the border with hundreds of thousands in coins, gold, and cash. Yeah, me neither. The GPS issue is due to the available maps in the unit. The Canadian map set needs to be uploaded to the receiver.
