I just watched a counterfeit 1921 D Walking Liberty half sell on ebay for over $700. When I found the auction, it had less than 5 minutes left. I reported it but it was too late.

The seller had listed it and added the word "read" to the title. After the description, it said "*facsimile*." However, the coin is not marked as a copy.

The auction # is 283418661138. It sold for $767.95 with 37 bids on it.

Ladies/gentlemen, please remember to read all of the details of an auction. Don't let the excitement of a "good deal" make you careless. Lastly, remember "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is."

I've attached a picture of the coin. The coin looks bad. The wear on the obverse around the lettering, yet no wear down the center high points.

Please use care when bidding, especially on key uncertified key dates.

.... to the Community!

You can't fix stupid, irresponsible behavior of sellers and bidders on ebay. It's been that way along time. It will continue.

Couldn't a coin like that cause a seller to get raided by the Secret Service?

Only if they did it on a large scale. A single coin like that would be so far down the priority list they'd never even get to investigating it much less a raid.

However, we can all protect ourselves from fakes.

Like many of us, I use ebay. More than I should I must admit. The coin in discussion, or any within this category of key and semi-key is why I would recommend a graded specimen only. And not one in those NGS slabs seen on ebay (several listed in the Peace dollar section). As for the 1921 being real or fake? Hard to say. A fool none the less paid over $700 to find out.
