Hi, Newbie here. I collected bullion bars and coins for a few years now and am getting interested in all sorts of coin collecting education. My current question is... I found a 1977 penny without mintmark in my change. A cursory search has told me that circulated ones aren't worth much beyond face value. Mine isn't marked-up, the strike is still very sharp. The color is just a normal brown patina. I viewed one video that said that there is a much smaller mintage of these coins from the San Francisco mint- rather than Philadelphia- and so the San Fran mint's are worth more. The video, however gave no indicators that would distinguish between these mints. Other websites added to my confusion. I'd appreciate any heads-up on this question. Also would you guess for me a ballpark figure for what a decent coin might bring. The on-line presence of sellers (for these) is apparently highly populated by charlatans. I've seen coins far rattier than mine offered for hundreds or thousands of dollars. Thanks for your replies. *** Moved by Staff moved to a more appropriate forum. ***

US Cents produced in Philadelphia have no mint mark (except those in 2017)

Then maybe my question is... how do I determine if this is an ordinary Philadelphia or it's some sort of rarity from San Francisco?

I won't have good photo equipment on hand until later in the week. My camera is a dinosaur. Hooray for my kid.
Is there anything I might look for in the interim?

As correctly stated above, your cent was minted in Philadelphia. A San Francisco mint example would have an 'S' mint mark on the obverse (front) under the date.
Your coin is likely worth face value. Concur that a photo would be helpful.

to CCF. We will need good photos. The cent if minted in Philadelphia would have no MM. If it was by chance minted at West Point, it also would not have a MM, Sanfran only minted proof coin as far as I know and would have a S MM. John1

Unless it is a super high grade coin, just a coin for spending.

Wikipedia, on the San Francisco Mint: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_Mint -- Quote:From 1975 to 2012, the San Francisco Mint has been used only for proof coinage, with the exception of the Susan B. Anthony dollar from 1979-81 and a portion of the mintage of cents in the early 1980s. The dollars bear a mintmark of an "S", but the cents are otherwise indistinguishable from those minted at Philadelphia With no way to distinguish them (and this suggests that the 1977 cent in question would not even qualify), they have no premium based on the mint of origin.

to the Community! San Francisco struck cents without mint marks from 1978 to 1983. Since this is 1977 you can rule that out. West Point struck them without mint marks from 1975 to 1986. Your 1977 cent may have come from Philly or it may have come from West Point. Regardless, it is impossible to know which it is.

Where have you seen a 1977 penny with no mint mark and an asking price of thousands of dollars? Or even more than $3? Did these coins have errors?

Pictures won't settle anything. That year Philadelphia made 3.074 billion cents with no mintmark, and West Point made 1.54 billion with no mintmark. Philadelphia made all the dies and there is no way to tell which mint a no mintmark cent came from for that year.
