I took two more photos using natural light coming in from the window. This coin looks fantastic in hand. I know the previous photo showed some things that some of you were suspicious of and I appreciate the advice more than you know. I just though that the direct, bright bulb lighting (very bright and harsh) was detracting from the 'in-hand eye appeal" of the coin. This is much more representative of what it looks like in real life. Even the color balance is much closer to the real coin. The lines you see in the previous photo are not visible to the naked eye. Only with a 10x lupe do they show up. The previous photo is approximately 10x. I know I am letting my emotions about this coin and it's mint get the best of me but I really do not want to let it go. I am getting ready to jump on it. What do you think of the above photos? They are unretouched. I did not even adjust brightness or contrast and did no sharpening or anything to them. Thanks again and sorry for being a PITA.

Mark, The lack of luster concerns me. It looks flat. I've had several CC Morgan dollars before and they all cartwheeled like crazy and had proof like appearances. It may have been messed with (puttied, dipped, etc).

MarkJ, Here's one from an NGC 63 holder. Your strike and details are similar. I'm hoping the "lack of luster" 1sikevo mentioned is from the camera and not the coin. Only you can answer that one.

I think Siveko makes a good point. This is a very nice looking coin which is either mint state or only very slightly worn. However, it does not have the strong luster which is present on almost all CC Morgans. MarkJ, your latest photos suggest that the hairlines are really pretty trivial but the lack of luster does raise some concerns about originality. Without actually having the coin in-hand I can only guess, but if the luster wasn't worn away, it may well have been dipped away!
If the seller will take $100 or $125 it should still be a good deal. If you are willing to pay his $200 asking price I would instead hold out for a nice MS-63 PCGS slabbed coin with few marks, a clean cheek, and spectacular luster. You will never regret holding out for the better coin.

Here is one in a PCGS MS-62 (now) holder, LOL... For comparison purposes...

If I ignore the lack of luster, I would give it MS63.

1878-CC Morgans are usually dripping with luster and frost that this coin seems to lack by the pictures in both threads. I collect 1878 Morgans and I can tell you there is just something about this coin that I do not like and I think its the lack of luster but not 100% sure what it is. it is your money and your final decision on whether you think its worth what they are asking or not but I think you could find one that looks better (maybe even graded) for the same price range. I still have a hard time giving it higher than MS-61 by my grading standards (which as I admitted sometimes can be harsh)and the lack of luster really bothers me that it could come back in a body bag because of over dipping or something

OK. I am letting this one go. It will probably show up on ebay. It will be interesting to watch the auction.

A local coin dealer had a 1878 CC that was in pretty bad shape. It was definitely circulated with copious amounts of wear and dirt and grime. I would hardly rate it a VG. He was asking $89.00 for it. I walked out of the store thinking to myself, "I love Coin Community Forums!"
I think the other guy is basing his belief that this coin is worth $200.00 - $250.00 based on the price the local dealer is selling an almost VG.

$200-250 is a fair price for MS61-62, cheap for 63, if this was a problem free coin. A VG is worth about $75-80, according to Greysheet.
