Hey Y'all, new member here. I just got an older looking box of penny rolls, and inside I found a whole box of 1981 D pennies. That is, all of the enders are, and I haven't opened any rolls to look further. They appear to be circulated, but in very good and mostly shiny condition. I am stumped as to why someone would have gone to all the trouble to collect and roll these, unless it is because they are the last full year of the copper ones. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help and I look forward to being in this community!

It may have been a collection dump. Someone was hoarding them and finally got tired of it.

@fixerdj, first welcome to CCF. Second, since you are asking for opinions on what to do next, I'd open up the rolls, look for varieties and errors and then dump them back in to the banking system as opposed to hoarding them. We do have a few folks here who stack copper so you may get some alternate advice here (which of course is fine).

if all the ends on that many rolls are the same 1981-D it is unlikely the coins are circulated

Judging from the rim colors, they're circulated, and the reward potential is low.

I agree with above.
I would read up on 1981 errors
Then check these and keep the best of the best then cash in the rest.

Thanks to all for the quick replies! I really do appreciate the input. I got really excited when I opened this box, thinking that they might be uncirculated, then I realized the rims looked a bit ugly here and there, and as I look closer at the enders that there were definitely circulation markings on them. My next Hope was that there could be proofs amongst these somewhere, but then I found that 1981 proofs all came from San Francisco. LOL dashed hopes! I think I will take the advice given, check them for any errors unless someone thinks a complete collection like this still rolled up is worth anything. Other than $25 that is. I suspect that since these are the last of the Copper's someone might have been collecting them for that purpose. I'm too old to wait out the possibility that they'll allow us to melt them down again someday LOL. Thanks again

I'd simply open the rolls just in case there is something really valuable in there. Could be a roll dumped into some place just to get rid of them. Or part of a collection.

Interesting pick up . Open 10 random rolls and see what's there . After that you can make a decision on what to do next .

Search them for the impossible MS-68! If you can get one into a PCGS slab in that grade it would be worth thousands. GOOD LUCK!
