What is the best way to resolve conflicting data among SCWC, Numista, the actual coins in hand, and other sources?
My 1842Zs OM Cap & Rays and 1780 FF Profile 8 Reales are slightly off of Medal Alignment, but Numista shows Coin Alignment for both. Other sources do not stipulate. SCWC and Numista show .917 and .903 fine silver. I simply want to have the correct data so I can print it without egg on my face when I make my new additions to the the binder pages.

If they are genuine, Spanish colonial 8 reales are medal alignment. Mexican issues started out with medal alignment but may have switched at some point in time. Do what I just did -- lookup similar coins on Heritage that have have photos of them in slabs.

Thank you for the reply, but after checking that, I did go on to more searching and finding results showing very good publications including PDF files to download about such coinage that explain when, where and why items like fineness and alignment were altered. That can explain why printed catalogs and some online sources list particular attributes one way that can be at variance to the actual coins. I like to learn about the coins I have in hand and understand how and why conflicting descriptions exist. As a result of online searching, I have found more publications to add to the library. As a side note, many coins shows have a corner or tables for publications. But my focus has mainly been coin dealer tables. As it is now, I need to spend more time looking for the books to buy.
