Hey Folks,
Just received my US Mint uncirculated set and found this error on the John Q. Adams P dollar. I believe it's a die crack but it could be a strike through.

Wondering if you think it's a die crack or if something caused this?

Thanks,
Bill

If it's on the coin, it's a die crack. It's hard to tell from the picture but it could also be a crack in the plastic.

Thanks,
Bill

Thanks Bill for the reply. It's on the coin, I didn't want to take it out of the plastic.

I might guess it's on the coin because I didn't see a shadow from the plastic in any of your shots. (but that doesn't mean I got it right).
Very interesting!

Yes, very interesting to see a die break that large.

Any chance that it could have been a foreign substance on the die, like a wire?

Die crack, not a die break They aren't the same thing.

It looks like a crack to me, especially in the third picture.

Under a loop the crack looks like a canyon, it's very deep. Edges are rough where as a strike through would have smoother lines (in most cases). I'll get a pic tonight with my QX5 and post it.

Thanks for all of your comments,
Bill

Only question for me is whether this is damage on the coin (a scrape) or a struck through. Difference would be that a struck through wouldn't have the metal dug up on the sides of the canyon, and a scrape would.

BTW, TS Fay has completely missed us in Sarasota, FL. Not a drop of rain so far, and highest gusts around 25-30 MPH. Some "hurricane" this turned out to be.

Whoa, hold on, stop! Looks like a canyon? Very DEEP? That raises a problem because a die crack would create a RAISED line on the coin not a canyon or anything that could be described as "deep"

Thanks to everyone. Glad the storm missed ya Chuck. I've been through too many storms including Ivan and they are no fun.

The more I look at this coin along with your comments, it looks like it's a struck through error. The ridges on the edges are raised and the gouge is very deep.

I've posted some pics taken at 20X with a QX5

Yup, it's struck through something. A cut in the coin wouldn't be so well defined and would have caught on the edges of the devices. What caused this groove was struck that way.

I agree with Chuck, a strike through.

As to Fay, we have had enough of her on the east coast of Florida, although I am glad it didn't turn into a 'cane, YET. The storm is baffling the experts, they do not know what it will do.

Thanks folks for your expert examination and evaluation.

We're keeping an eye on Fay up here in the Panhandle. Never know what this thing will go. Just like Opal, everyone thought she was going west and then did a button-hook and landed right in our lap.

The newer pictures are a great help. I agree with those that feel it is a "strike through error".
