Keith, the date I believe is 1915. The coin appears to have taken a severe hit from the southeast upward pushing metal from the 5 up next to the top of 1. This would also cause the top of 1 to push some metal westward. Post mint damage.

Date appears to be seriously (and badly) altered. Does it have the VDB on the shoulder? I ask because the obverse design does not seem to match the pre 20 Lincolns and I suspect a much later date. It isn't just a case of simple damage to the date because how would you explain the lengthening of the 1? It is considerable longer than the 1 on a coin from the teens and it also has managed to acquire a top serif which I believe only appears on a couple of years in the entire Lincoln series.

The date on this coin is 1975. It is not consistent with any design used before 1974.

Wow...yeah, I did not even see "1915" at first due to the design looking much later.

I gotta learn more about Lincoln's. I knew something was amiss, but couldn't tell you what that was.

I agree with coppercoins. The size of date font is to large for a 1915. Is the reverse wheat?

Also the third number does not curve at all. In all the 7's and 9's they all curve towards the inside of the coin slightly.

I guarantee you this is a 1975. No question about it in my mind.

What could have caused it to look like this?

It could be a bag nick from another coin that hit that area or it could be deliberate damage. You never know what coins go through before you get them. Either way it is not a good thing for the coin.
